News Outa Spain

Eleven pigeons have died at a prestigious pigeon racing event in Spain.

The Barcelona 2020 race is the biggest endurance event of the year for European pigeon racers. In all nearly 15,000 pigeons were registered to race 1,062km across the Pyrenees.

The organising club, Club des Internationaux Français (CIF), had to withdraw 2,000 birds from the event citing concerns about safety and “fairness in this competition for all”.

It is believed that the birds may have died after a container that feed the birds was contaminated.

The rest of the 13,000 pigeons took part in the race, which finished last weekend. The winning pigeon was a bird called Karscu Alin who travelled 1008km and averaged 1104meter per min.
