Master Chef at Tamaki by Hope

Today for Technology the Kia Manawanui Syndicate went to Tamaki College and we were split into our groups. The group that I got put into was cooking. In cooking class we made Silver Beef with Vegetables soup. So its like a soup but with vegetables and beef.

Here is a simple step by step process including ingredients:

Step 1. Slice your meat and boil with cabbage and potato.

- First we peel and cut the carrot before putting it into the pan.

- Next peel the onion, cut the onion then put into the pan.

- Thereafter we cut the cauliflower and put into the pan.

- Then we cut the broccoli and put it into the pan.

- This was followed by adding tomato to the pan.

Step 2 -  use spices - put salt into the pan first.

- Put a little of pepper into the pan. You may add chilli powder according to your taste.

Growth Mindset by Syraiah-Lee

Today, we asked to reflect on what having a growth mindset means and how this has an impact on our learning. This year, we have been doing a lot of discussions around “growth” versus “fixed” mindsets. To briefly summarise, individuals who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset. They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset (those who believe their talents are innate gifts). 

What is really cool about our school is that having a growth mindset is not only important for students, but our teachers also embrace this concept. This has resulted in students taking greater ownership of their learning which encourages a focus on effort rather than intelligence. Our learning takes place in a fun, relaxed environment where our opinions and perspectives are valued.

🇼🇸🌺Samoan Language Week🌺🇼🇸 at TPS

Talofa Lava and greetings to you all! As it says in the title, it is Samoan Language Week! YAY! When we celebrate any culture at our school it usually includes each class preparing an item for a special assembly that is held after a week of embracing the cultural differences and identities. 

In this case, Samaon Language Week. For Samoan Language Week, Room 9/10 have prepared two items. The first item which is a Siva Samoa will be done by the room 9/10 girls while the room 9/10 boys will be showing the Samoan haka. 

The song that we will be dancing to is called "Loimata o le fia fia"  we've been practicing this Siva Samao since last week Wednesday, I think that the girls have prepared well and everything is going great. I would say the same as for the boys. Here is the version of the haka that they have been practising. Enjoy the rest of the week, Samoan Language Week!!

Improving Blog Comments by Alyssa

Today, in the Kia Manawanui Syndicate, we did a Cybersmarts lesson on how we can improve our blog comments.  The important thing that I learned today was that everybody can improve on their blog commenting skills and that we always need to be asking the following questions. "Is it positive, thoughtful and helpful?" 

More than anything we need to double-check our sentences to make sure that it is grammatically correct and that it makes sense. 

We also had to reread (edit) our comments have share it with a friend before posting it. The google drawing on the right has some key elements of effective blogging criteria. 

Some useful food for thought! WHAT YOU DO TODAY CAN IMPROVE ALL THE OTHER TOMORROWS! Hopefully you find the hints and tips useful and can apply that to you own blogging checklist. I look forward to and appreciate any feedback and feedforward that you may have to offer.

IALT: Solve an Algebraic Equations.

Malo E Lelei and welcome back to my blog! Today in Room 9 for Maths, I learned how to solve an Algebraic equation.

I asked Mr Janse to give me ANY equation and I thought he was going ask, "34 x 14" or "128 x 6" But instead he said, "2x + 14 = 80" and my job was to find the value of the 'x'. On my first attempt to solve this equation, I divided 80÷14 and Mr Janse said that's not quite correct yet. I was really confused so Mr Janse made it a bit easier and said, "Okay, the value of the 'x' is 33. Find out how and why?" This made it a lot easier and I looked at the equation and said the x is 33 because 33 x 2 = 66 and 66 + 14 = 80!" I was really happy that I had found the answer and Mr Janse then taught me how to formulate it. 

This is how you would write the answer to the equation:

There is supposed to be a dot/space between the 2 and 'x'. 

This looks like:

2.x

The dot means to multiply so basically you're multiplying                                         the 2 by the 'x'.

2.x + 14 = 80

What we're first trying to do is get rid of the 14 so to get rid of the 14 we have to subtract 14 away from 14 which equals 0. 

(14-14=0)

Then we have to do the same with the 80. For example:

2x = 80 - 14

When Mr Jay explained how to solve this he always wrote '2x =' before he would continue. This looks like:

2x = 66

Which also means 80-14=66

Next you have to divide 66÷2 which is the number before the x. This should look like:

2x = 66÷2

And then the answer will be the value of the 'x'.

x = 33

Wait! We're not done yet. The 33 will the become the substitute of the 'x' and this will make the equation:

2.33 + 14 = 80

Because:

2x33=66

66+14=80

I am really glad I learned how to solve Algebraic Equations and I am very happy that I was able to show Ako and teach Hevani and Grace how to solve these questions! One thing I need to work on is explaining WHY I have to always write 2x=, and WHAT does it do to the equation, but this just shows how much more I have to learn!

Multiplying by Round and Compensating by Grace

WALT: Multiply using tidy numbers, rounding and compencating.

Bonjour and greetings to you all! Welcome to my blog!

Throughout this term for Maths I have learnt how to use rounding and compensating. This strategy was new to me so I was looking forward to learn more about it. We started by multiplying one digit number to a 2 digit number. With rounding you have to remember that when you are rounding up you compensate by subtracting the number and you do the same when you are rounding it down you compensate by adding. That is why it is important that you know your basic facts really well because once you know them it would help you even more in your maths.





Here is an example:

3 x 78= 234
  ( 80 x 3 - 3 x 2)
( 240 - 6)
=  234

So what I have done here is that I have rounded  78 to its nearest 10 which is 80 and to get to 80 I added 2. Then I multiplied 80 by 3 which equals 240. I know this because 8 x 3 = 24 , 24 x 10 = 240. The next step is that you multiplied 3 by 2. The reason why I did this is that whenever you compensating a number by adding and subtract and you are multiplying, you then multiply that number. After that you subtract the total that you got 240 and 6. Which equals 234. Like what I have said before when you are round up you then have to subtract.

I have enjoyed learning this method and knowing how easy it is to use it. Now I can use this to solve complicated questions/equations rather than using algorithm all the time.

Kia Manawanui - Team Building through Whanaungatanga

In week 4 it was whanaungatanga week which included participating in team building activities with our peers and our teachers. The activities provided helped us to build positive relationships with each other in our syndicate. We had a fun week of team building - Take a look at the video clips below.

All about Kia Manawanui

At the beginning of the year we completed an 'All about Me' task which has been made into a syndicate quilt. We had to use signs and symbols to describe who we are. For example we had to use signs and symbols to show our personality traits, our likes and dislikes, beliefs, culture or heroes.

Welcome Back to School - Kia Manawanui 2019

We have kick started the year positively in our Kia Manawanui learning space. We have a new teacher this year - Mr Jay who will be team teaching together with Ms Aireen this year.

We have 42 students in the Kia Manawaui so far this year and are hoping more students will join our team throughout the year. It's great to be back to school with our friends and teachers. We look forward to a year of exciting learning experiences and adventures.
