A huge explosion has hit central Beirut.
The explosion, in the Lebanese capital, was centred at the port. At this stage 135 casualties have been confirmed, with over 5000 people injured. The blast was felt throughout the country, even over 100km away.
Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab said an estimated 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate had been stored at a warehouse for six years. This was the cause of the explosion
Ammonium nitrates is an ingredient in fertiliser – and some bombs. It was the most powerful explosion in years to hit Beirut, which is already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in coronavirus infections.
